All You Need To Know About OET

The Occupational English Test is an exam intended to test the English language proficiency of medical professionals wishing to develop their careers in an English-speaking country. The exams are divided into four sections that test listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, respectively. The individual sections will have differences based on the medical professions of the intended participants.

OET listening sub-test

The listening subtest is divided into three parts, A, B, and C, in order to effectively assess candidates’ listening skills.The listening subtest is divided into three parts, A, B, and C, in order to effectively assess candidates’ listening skills. Each section tests various aspects of listening.

  • Mode of examination: Computer-based test or Paper-based test
  • Number of questions: 42 (sentence completion and MCQs)
  • Exam duration: 50 minutes

OET Reading Sub-Test

Just like the listening sub-test, the reading sub-test also follows a three part format with parts A, B, and C, respectively. Then you intend to assess various aspects of your reading skills.

  • Mode of examination: Computer-based test or Paper-based test
  • Number of questions: 42 (matching, sentence completion, short answer, and MCQs)
  • Exam duration: 60 minutes

OET Writing Sub-Test

This test assesses your writing skills by asking the candidate to write a letter based on an official issue related to a workplace situation.

  • Mode of examination: Computer-based test or Paper-based test
  • Exam duration: 40 minutes

OET Speaking Sub-Test

This test uses the candidate’s roleplay with the interlocutor to assess and evaluate the overall communication skills of the candidate. The interlocutor takes on the role of a patient whose information was provided to the candidate five minutes before the test to prepare for the interaction.

  • Mode of examination: Video conference or Face to face
  • Exam duration: 20 minutes
